Flat Glass ( Different types )
|
|
 |
 |
There are many different types
of glass. Some include:
Flat(annealed) glass
has been cooled in a controlled manner (annealing) to
prevent stress build-up that could cause breakage. Flat
glass is used chiefly in windows. It is also can be
used in picture frames, shelving, tabletops and more.
Flat glass can also come in many different colors including
bronze, grey, green, blue, blue-green, etc.
Mirrors
- are made from high-quality annealed glass. A layer
of silver is deposited on one surface of the glass and
then the backing is protected by a special coating.
Laminated safety glass
is a "sandwich" made by combining alternate layers of
flat glass and plastics. The outside layer of glass
may break when struck by an object, but the plastic
layer is elastic and so it stretches. The plastic holds
the broken pieces of glass together and keeps them from
flying in all directions. Laminated glass is used where
broken glass might cause serious injuries, as in automobile
windshields or skylights.
Tempered safety glass,
unlike laminated glass, is a single piece that has been
given a special heat treatment. It looks, feels, and
weighs the same as ordinary glass but it is four to
five times stronger. Tempered glass is used widely for
shower doors, commercial doors, side and rear windows
of automobiles, basketball backboards, and for other
special purposes. It is hard to break even when hit
with a hammer. When it does break, the whole piece of
glass shatters into a large number of small, dull-edged
fragments.
Heat-strengthened glass
is annealed glass that is heat treated to increase strength
by a factor of approximately two.
Bullet-resisting glass
is thick, multilayer laminated glass. This glass can
stop even heavy-caliber bullets at close range. Bullet-resisting
glass is heavy enough to absorb the energy of the bullet,
and the several plastic layers hold the shattered fragments
together. Such glass is used in bank teller windows
and in windshields for military tanks, aircraft, and
special automobiles.
Patterned Glass,
also referred to as obscure glass, figured glass, and
decorative glass. We carry more than 15 different patterns
and are available to be viewed in our showroom. Patterned
glass serves the following purposes: (1) They control
light (2) They diffuse the details of objects (3) They
are decorative. Patterned glass is available in amber
but the choice is very limited. Some of the patterns,
because of their depth, make tempering the glass impossible.
Wired Glass
is used in fire-rated windows and doors because it does
meet most fire codes. For these applications, all wires
must be imbedded in the glass. Even though wired glass
meets fire codes, it is not a safety glass. In fact,
it has only one-half the strength of annealed glass
of the same thickness. Wired glass cannot be tempered.
Wired glass is commonly referred to as GPW (Georgian
Polished Wire) or GCW (Georgian Cast Wire).
Reflective Glass
is clear or tinted glass that has a very thin layer
of metal or metallic oxide on the surface. The reflective
coating reduces heat gain and glare from the outside
while allowing visible light to enter the inside.Reflective
glass gives a mirror-like appearance. An advantage is
energy savings because it reflects and absorbs the sun's
rays, reflective glass reduces the amount of radiation
that enters the building. This can save money in heating
and air-conditioning costs. Another advantage is comfort
as reflective glass reduces the variations of interior
temperature.
Low Emissivity Glass
is commonly called Low E glass. This type of reflective
glass has a very thin metallic coating that is not very
visible (a very slight yellow hue). The advantage is
that Low E glass helps keep heat out in the summer and
heat in during the winter. It blocks the indoor heat
from escaping in the winter months, and in the summer,
it reflects over 80% of the sun's infrared and ultraviolet
rays which fade carpets, draperies, and furniture. At
the same time, it allows visible sunlight to enter the
room.
Neoceram
is a ceramic commonly used for woodstove or fireplace
inserts that withstands continuous temperatures of 1470
degrees. It is available in 5mm (3/16") with an amber
tint. Please call today for your free quotation for
neoceram.
